welcome! and enjoy Boston... I'll admit that last year the brunch was fun but I (will admit now)really needed name tags, with 'real names' as well as cyber-names... but then I'm not very good with names anyway... glad you're here!! _________________ "We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves..." I joined a little bit ago and have been lurking and now feel comfortable that my insanity will be welcomed here. Quick intro: July 2007 I decided to run a marathon to celebrate my 50th birthday. Hadn't run for over 20 years and when I ran in my youth only did 3 miles so have no idea why I picked a marathon. I was even sober when I made the decision so can only blame it on a senior moment. Fast forward to April. Turned 50 on Tuesday, ran the Yakima River Canyon Marathon on Saturday and had an absolute blast. I think it was Ric I met on the course, who told me about this great site and here I am. I'll mainly lurk and try to extract great tomes of knowledge from all your brains!!
Good luck to all of you heading to Boston, can't wait to hear all about it. _________________ If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning. Catherine Aird |

I've been lurking since NC runner posted a thing on double dog daring Matt to run a marathon.
I go by shnog or runnershnog, have run 1 ultra and 11 marathons. I'm marathon maniac 976. I've been running ultras and marathons since 2002 and reside in IL, near St. Louis. I'm also on the monkey board. _________________ It's all about the 2 month taper |

Color me a newbie!
My name's Tracy and I live just north of Atlanta. I started running just over a year ago (March 2008) to try and lose some weight. I ended up losing 30 lbs and finding a new hobby.
I ran my first half marathon in March (Disney Princess) and my second 1.5 weeks ago (Flying Pig). My third (Fairfield, CT - my hometown) is coming up end of June.
At the Flying Pig expo I officially signed up for the Rock N Roll San Antonio full marathon, so that will be my first full.

Alpharetta - so about 25 miles.
I'd looked at the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon (among others) when I was considering races for my first. In the end I picked San Antonio cause I've always wanted to go to Texas and I've never been. Maybe that's a silly reason but . . . _________________ -tracy (aka. Toots) |

Welcome Tracy/Toots! What a welcome site - a newby here. We've been inbred for a long time, so forgive inside jokes (and feel free to ask - you'll learn that everyone here is a storyteller just waiting for an audience), and join the fray! I can't wait to hear about your races - especially that first full that is just beckoning to you! _________________ "Through the years, I have learned that there is no harm in charging oneself up with delusions between moments of valid inspiration." - Steve Martin

I missed this before so I'll add it now.
I'm Abby
Daughter of David, or "Doctor F" as he's known here.
I'm 17 years old.
I was born into running. I remember doing one mile runs when I was, like, 7 and have seen pictures of me with running numbers even younger.
I was never fast, so I guess I wasn't destined to stay at short distances because it's easier to excuse being slow when I say "Oh, but I never run less than 3 miles." Or, "But I was running 8 miles."
I just completed my first half marathon last weekend.
Some tragic events spurred me into being crazy enough to think I can run a marathon, and actually start me training for New Orleans.
My goal is to keep up running and stay in shape. And of course, finish this marathon and hope it inspires me to do some more. _________________ BeadsFlowersFreedomHappiness17. |

Hello,
I'm so glad I found these pages! I think all the runners are so great and nice people!
I'm Aila, live in San Jose CA - have been here since 1993 when my husband wanted to move back home... we met in Brussels, Belgium where we both worked. I'm orginally from Finland.
I have been a very, very heavy smoker all my life - but luckily almost 5 years ago I was able to quit. I was gaining weight and couldn't excercise because I couldn't breathe properly! So, Dec. 6 I dropped the smokes and have been smoke free since. I started excercising and easiest was of course running on the treadmill... With lots and lots of encouragement, weight loss and all kinds of good stuff happening to me - I continued running. I believe I'm quite goal oriented person and once I got the running bug, I started to set goals for myself.
First goal was to run Marine Corps Marathon in DC before I turn 50... so I did it last October! I'm still not 50...
Next is to run 5 marathons before I turn 50 and I'm on my way... if everything goes well, I will run my 5th on Dec. 5, just 10 days before my goal date. I have not signed up for the Sacramento marathon yet, but that probably would be the last one this year.
So very nice to meet you all - I will explore all these boards during my lunch hours... hope to talk to you all! _________________ Aila |

Welcome and many congrats on kicking the smoking habit! Tell me your secret cause we're trying to get our 25 year old son to quit and he's having a hard time.
Good luck with your 5 before 50. There are quite a few over 50 runners on this board so you are in good company. _________________ Marathon Maniac #712

Hey,
Thank you for your welcomes and encouragement!
e - for your son, he just have to make the decision to quit and decide that it's not part of his life any more. Now when I look back, all the stinky clothes, not to mention all the millions of wrinkles - receeding hairline (yes, even for a woman it's possible!) tight clothes, yellow teeth and nails, I don't know how I did it for 30 years?!?!?
It's amazing how you can get your hair and skin back (well, wrinkles stay, but at least there is a pinkish hue instead of yellow, on your skin). Even foods taste so much better now. Good luck for him, I'm sure he will be able to quit, when he has great parent who care! _________________ Aila |

yep...old broads abound... I'm 56 and love doing marathons (notice I didn't say running as I now run/walk them) _________________ "We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves..." Sir Roger Bannister

Welcome Aila! Indeed, congratulations on kicking the habit. Growing up I HATED the fact my folks smoked and I never gave in to peer pressure. However, for some stupid reason I picked up the habit at 29 and got hooked (I think I was up to almost a pack a day!) Fortunately it didn't last long (less than a year). I went to one of those group hypnotist sessions at a local hotel. It was cheesy as Hell but it somehow worked on me.
When I got back in to running and ran my first marathon at age 43 I decided I'd make it a goal to run 15 marathons by the time I turned 50. When I ran my 15th marathon a year and a half later, I adjusted my goal to running 50 by 50. Well, I ran my 50th last May (I'm not yet 47). So now my goal is to continue running as much as possible while still having fun! _________________ - Betsy, Maniac #1077 |
