I remember a discussion a while back about running to work (I think Dr Bri was taking a fake shower in a Starbucks bathroom?), and then my sister said something to me recently about running her errands - literally, for groceries and library books and stuff, with a Camelbak.
This weekend, I have volunteer training Saturday and Sunday from 9-5 both days. Adding annoyance, the training is an hour subway ride away from me and there are already heat advisories out for both days. I think I have my schedule pretty much under control: I can wake up early and do shorter runs both days, then put my long run off until Monday morning when my time is more flexible.
But, it got me thinking... how feasible is it to run to a place? To work, I could see, since I could leave my work clothes there the night before. But in a situation like this, I'd have to carry it all on my back. Does anyone do anything like that? _________________ -Tracy |

I have biked to and from work, but only on weekends. Bike commuting seems like it could be a good way to get extra workouts in, but it doesn't work so well when you need to wear a suit at work.
I have thought of running home from the office (it's about 10 miles), and then having my wife drop me off at work the next morning as my office is on the way to hers, but that's not really a practical thing to do and would not really save me any time.
I have taken the boys running, one on his bike and the other in the jogger and then stopped at the supermarket on the way back to buy something for dinner (the groceries fitting into the bottom of the jogger) although I have then walked home from the supermarket. |

I've done it when dropping my car off (or picking it up) for service (about 5 miles), but that is usually a non-working day so I don't have to deal with shower/clean clothes. When I go to Trader Joe's or the grocery store I usually walk since it is only a mile or so each way and it doesn't seem worth the hassle to run. _________________ -k e n t

for me this is about four miles....
I've 'run to the store' when I needed to get one thing on the list in order to make dinner and I also had to get a run in... Also a couple times I've 'run to the store' as the last 6 miles of a long run that I had no motivation to finish, one store is three miles away and I take cash and by a diet coke... not good for fuel or hydration but even the promise of caffeine keeps me going
never ran or biked to work _________________ "We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves..." Sir Roger Bannister

I run "to the bank" all the time as it is at the 3 mile turn around on one of my normal running routes. Back when I worked in Wechester Cty, I used to alternate run to/from work days. The bummer came when it would snow or rain unexpectedly. They had showers at work (even in the mid-1980s), so it was fun. _________________ -Miles of smiles, M i c h e l e

When work is involved, I've only run to work -- from home (1 or the car repair (2.5), but I have a shower at work and can plan ahead. I've run home from places (a conference in NoVa to my parents' former home in DC - , but I was able to leave my clothes to pick up at the next day's session.
One thing I'm really missing this year is our former Saturday routine that I'd run to the Green City Market in Chicago from home (11) where I'd meet my wife to do our shopping. _________________ “Students generally feel that if you come to Harvard, for what you’re paying, you should probably have the right to a hot breakfast.” |

I've stopped by the grocery store (there's one about 1.5 miles from my house on one of my regular routes) to pick up a thing or two when I needed to run and grab something for breakfast/lunch/dinner/whatever, but it's not a regular thing. I used to ponder running to work, since it was just a few miles away and had a shower, but the need to carry in my laptop/clothes/whatever made it seem totally unappealing. _________________ The first rule of Club Dawnie: Hardcore, all day, every day.

I sometimes run to races. Get you a nice warmup or a long run with a pickup in the middle. _________________ It's all fun and games until the flying monkeys attack. |
