I haven't posted much here since the beginning of the year. I think I did post that I had a herniated disk in my back and couldn't run, and that lowered my motivation to come visit TM.

Almost six months later, things are only marginally better. I have no pain when getting up or sitting down or rolling over in bed; it was pretty bad early on. I still have some numbness in my left foot, though, and occasional pain in my left hip that's based on position and movement.

In the first months of my running ban, I was highly motivated to keep in shape. I either swam or used the stationary cycle 5-6 days a week.

In the last month, I've been traveling almost nonstop. I've flown 40,000+ actual miles since May 31 - Germany, Sweden, Korea and England. The effect has been disastrous on my ability and motivation to work out. I cycled to my meetings in Sweden, stationary-cycled once and swam once in Korea, and walked a lot in England, but nothing very intense.

Now that I'm back, especially with the heat, my motivation to do anything is minimal. I have to figure out a way to get back to something until I can run again.

I've managed to avoid a full-on Phyllis, but my weight is starting to creep up lately. Time to battle through the disappointment at not being healed and get moving...

Who are you?

Wink

Sorry to hear things still aren't where you'd like them to be. But glad to see you popping in to say hello. Hopefully we'll be able to provide some motivation and inspiration!

I bet. Your arms must be tired.

I'd suggest you go to the elliptical. At least you will be doing something.

I am soooo aware of the back issues and hope you find relief soon. I hope surgery can be avoided if at all possible but also know running can resume post surgery. Keep us updated and my prayers are with you on a recovery.

No advice, but tons of sympathy. Well, sympathy that is a bit abated via the magic of jealously of all those cool places you've been. So I'll just put this in small letters, instead of monster font: prick!

while I am jealous of the frequent flyer points I hope you racked up, I am not jealous of the pain you had to go through... hope you find a way to get & stay motivated. My little knee pain issue derailed my motivation almost completely so when you come up with the solution I'd love to hear it... it's so easy to just be able to go out the door for a run, everything else seems such a chore.

Says the woman who is about to go to the Tour de France??!!

David, I feel your pain, and wish I had the perfect words of wisdom to motivate you. My lay-off has been longer than yours (not completely out of necessity anymore), and the motivation I have found recently comes from finally being tired of feeling chubby and weak. I can do something to find some fitness, even just walking, until I feel like a runner again. Maybe just start by walking with with Leslie. You remember her, right? Wink Good luck!

Nothing to add on the medical front - just that we miss your wisdom around here, so don't be a stranger any more. Hope the back gets better soon - or maybe you can take up swimming??

We do what we can when we can DK. Don't look back or forward, just focus on what you can do right now and take it one step at a time.

Might I suggest having Bob join you on a nice "easy" run at Waterfall Glen?

Update! I was cleared for some easy running a week or two ago -- 3:1 run:walks for 15 minutes every other day, at first. Since the first several of those went well, I've bumped up the time a bit to 3:30:1 and added one more repeat, with no ill effect.

I feel amazingly out of shape, acknowledging that I never got a chance to acclimate to the heat. It'll still be a while before I'm ready for any sustained runs, but it sure does feel good to be outdoors and moving again!

congrats on getting into the run:walk thing (as opposed to the sitting on the couch thing)... stay on track and don't boost up too quickly, especailly in the heat..
