Ian - can you change my Mayor's Marathon on 6/19 to the half when you get a chance?
Also, please add:
9/26 - You Go Girl Half Marathon
10/3 - San Jose Rock & Roll Half
Thanks! _________________ The first rule of Club Dawnie: Hardcore, all day, every day.

If you can add I decided to run the Eau Claire 1/2 Sunday with a friend. He is running the 3rd of 11 consecutive thons with the goal of all sub-four. _________________ "Don't we know one of them maverick's" Trent

Change the Buncombe Trail 34 mile race to the Enoree Passage 40 mile race. Terri Hayes is the SC ultra series RD and she has changed a couple of the races I have signed up for into longer distance events. She is going to let Marathon Maniacs run a shorter 30 mile version of the race this weekend if we want. I will probably opt for that with 2 tough trail marathons coming up.
Thanks Ian. _________________ Marathon Maniac #712

I ran it last year.
I remember that it was pretty hot, and that it was dark when we started.
I guess I wouldn't recommend it for a PR, but it was a fun time. _________________ - Shoeless Matt |

Pez. Dude. Sadness abounds.
I have run Tupelo twice and may yet this year. It starts about 90 minutes predawn, runs through the Mississippi swamp in the high Summer and has some substantial rolling. Hot. Humid. Hilly. A fine sufferfest. Among the best, really. Well supported, with a BBQ at the end. It is an out and back course, but since you cover a chunk of it predawn, most of the course feels new. And this: DO NOT use a headlamp.
And no, it is not good for a PR. Matt, what do you do for your feet predawn? _________________ It's all fun and games until the flying monkeys attack. |

Scratch me from Twisted Ankle this coming weekend. With Mel's car either totalled or needing massive repairs, I will be taxiing her to work and back on Saturday. Totally bummed. I signed up for that race the day it opened, months ago. But silver linings. Mel only has bruises and air bag burns from her accident yesterday and it was the other driver's fault. _________________ Marathon Maniac #712

Lots of rocks and lots of profanity. I usually slow down even more and take light, cautious strides.
Tupelo has some added misery for the shoeless runner. There is about 4-5 miles of that rough, gravely, road surface. And the grass shoulder in that section is worse than the road.
Anyway, lots of cursing. _________________ - Shoeless Matt |

Another Tupelo vet... 2x. Trent summed it up pretty good. Many people start with a throw away light, but if there is a moon then you can get by without it.
Even though it starts well before dawn, the humidity can be amazingly high. So even if the temps are down, it's hard to cool off from sweat because it won't evaporate.... which is what actually cools you.
That said, it's a marathon for people who love a challenge, and the medal, shirt, and credo represent that... "Trample the weak. Hurdle the dead." That says it all... and the skull and crossbones medal is something truly earned.
Run it for the challenge. It's a great race with a great support team and way cool runners. |

I like this weekend for a double. Last year, I did Indy/Louisville and it was nice even with all that driving.
You can thank me if the high school kids manning the aid station around mile 16 and 23 are on their best behavior this year. I complained (like a crotchety old man), and the RD contacted me personally to get it straightened out. I really like the way he handled it. I'd run it again just because of that. _________________ - Shoeless Matt |

Clarence Demar, NH, 9/26/10
FATS 50K, SC, 10/3/10
Nashville Ultra, TN, 10/16/10
Marshall University Marathon, WV, 11/7/10 (didn't want to miss the party!)

Whoo hoo! Party time in West Virginia.
I looked at your map Leann. We'll have to pick something out to run in Iowa next year. My hometown puts on a nice race in late October...On the Road for Education. It's mostly paved greenways, nature preserve trails, and farm country gravel roads. Surprisingly enough, it is not flat at all. Very rolling. _________________ Marathon Maniac #712

Well, I definitely do *not* have my fall lineup set (at least not all of it), but I'm thinking about these, so why not publicly commit? Here's hoping the foot (as well as the rest of the body) holds up!
Clarence Demar, NH, 9/26/10
Asbury Park Marathon, NJ, 10/17/10
Marshall University Marathon, WV, 11/7/10 (also didn't want to miss the party!)
Route 66 Marathon, OK, 11/21/10

I'm not totally commiting either as all of it depends on Shannon's softball commitment and whether or not the state of GA will arrest me for leaving a 17 yr old home alone for a weekend.
Current thoughts though:
Clarence Demar 9/26 (may not happen due to softball)
Ridge to Bridge 10/31
or Asbury Park 10/17
And well, I'd love to do Marshall too, but we will see. I've never done them back to back.
(Right now I'm leaning towrds RtB because it is only driving distance, and I need a BQ, and it is fast)
I'd love to do Leading Ladies on 8/15, but logistics might prevent that. _________________ -Miles of smiles, M i c h e l e

Ridge to Bridge: David and Rhonda Lee organize this race, and though I have not run this Marathon, I can tell you that David and Rhonda are really great people who care about the runners.
Asbury Park: I haven't run this one either, but I ran a Marathon in pretty much the exact same area. If this is put on by the Jersey Shore Running Club (or something like that), beware. I was treated like shit when I ran up there on the Jersey Shore. I can send you a link to my race report if you are interested in more details. _________________ - Shoeless Matt |

Asbury Park. Interesting. I seem to recall Matt's report. I took a look at the website and it looks like it is the same group that runs the Jersy Shore marathon in the spring. If it is the same, I will tell you that I had no problems with the organization when I ran either the short race (I think it was 10 or 12 miles) and the full marathon, but read Matt's report. If it were a different weekend, I might consider the relay. Unlikely I can make it this year.

Please send the link - I like to steer clear of bad organization in a race. |
Okay, I found the report, and while I sympathize with your bad fortune, it doesn't sound like it is a malicious or even incompetent race organization. In your report, you admit that you didn't use the "official tag" for your drop bag, and that you missed the instructions for labeling the drop bag. You also say that you arrived in NJ at 1 a.m. on the day of the race. None of those things make for optimal conditions for dealing with something like the detailed instructions for a drop bag.
I've volunteered for marathons multiple times, and I can tell you that most volunteers get specific instructions for their assignment, and not always a lot of other information. Again, I do sympathize that you lost your drop bag, but the fact that you asked a number of volunteers who didn't know where the bags were doesn't indicate to me bad race organization.
My holy grail is race integrity. Is the course measured and marked correctly? Are there course workers to keep people on track? And markings on the road or signs posted for the same purpose? Does the race start on time? Is the timing accurate? Do you get what you were promised (liquids on the course, port-a-potties at start/finish/on-course, t-shirt, medal, etc.)? It doesn't sound like you had any complaints about those things, so I wouldn't use your experience to dissuade me from running Asbury Park.
By the way, the Delaware Marathon didn't have a bag check at all. We were fortunate (!?!) to have a warm day so that having warm clothes before/after the race wasn't a concern. _________________ "Through the years, I have learned that there is no harm in charging oneself up with delusions between moments of valid inspiration." - Steve Martin

Judy, if you're planning on running one of those events, I hope to read about how well the race went. I hope it's not run by the same organization. If it is, be careful. _________________ - Shoeless Matt |
