I know we've got a lot of folks from the DC area on here - are any of you from Baltimore?

I'll be there next week (Sun - Fri) for work, and am looking for any advice on good places to run while I'm there. (Although, if the weather is anything like it was this past weekend? There's a good chance the only running I'll be doing is on the treadmill.)

I'll be at the Mariott Hunt Valley - according to Google Maps, it looks like it's right off I-83, near the Hunt Valley mall. It also looks like it's near Gunpowder Falls State Park - are you familiar with that area?

No, not at all.

What are you doing in town? You wouldn't be interested in one of the 5k's, would you?

Dawnie,

You'll be very close to the NCR Trail - a great place to run, and unlike most of the terrain around Hunt Valley, it's flat. For more info:

http://www.marylandrunning.com/runs/NCRTrail/

You might not want to run alone so you can join the Baltimore Road Runners Club as they do long runs on the trail on Saturday mornings and meet very close to the Hunt Valley Marriott. More info:

http://www.brrc.com/

Since you have the google maps thing working, check out Paper Mill Rd - just east of Shawan and York Roads. The NCR Trail ends just south of Paper Mill and then extends north to PA.

Trail info: http://www.brrc.com/NCTdescrp.html

If you have any other questions fire away.

Dawnie:

As Russ points out, the NCR trail is a good bet. I'd also check out Loch Raven Reservoir, another beautiful place to run.

Does this mean there's hills around there? Really? I'm finding that since everything around me is flat as a pancake, I get bizarrely excited about the chance to run on any sort of interesting topography. It's a sickness.

Thanks for the NCR trail info! That is, indeed, right by my hotel, as is the Loch Raven Resevoir. I'm looking forward to exploring them next week.

Then I've got the cure for what ails you. If this google map link works right: http://tinyurl.com/nyodh you can zoom in a bit on the area where you are staying. There are plenty of hills just west of I-83. Actually, you could head out your hotel and run north on York Rd. to Belfast and turn left (or before that is Quaker Bottom). Or you could get there faster by heading west on Shawan over to the country club and turn right. Either way, if you head over toward the areas of Western Run Road, Cuba Rd, or Thornton Mill Rd you'll find plenty of hills. Have fun! I want to hear about your running.

I had a lovely run this morning, staying on Shawan and York road, for the most part. Lovely rolling terrain. It's fantastic, and not too horribly hot first thing in the morning.

I took a drive down York, Belfast and Western Run today after class let out. It is, indeed, super-hilly over that way. I may hit that up tomorrow morning. I'll keep you posted.

One annoying thing? Most of the roads don't have sidewalks, and in some places the shoulder is practically non-existent. This does not make for a happy Dawnie. There will definitely NOT be any running in the evenings, as I'd be afraid of someone coming around a turn or over a hill, not paying attention, and disaster occurring. However, traffic was pretty light this morning, so I think early AM will continue to be OK.

Dawnie, Did you get over to the hills this morning? How did it go?

I slept in yesterday and didn't get a chance to head out there, but today I did a 5-mile run over on Western Run Road.

Beautiful. Hilly. Amazing. Definitely tough in some spots, but when I got done I still thought, "that's it?" I felt like I could have run out there all day long. Loved it. Huge thanks to you guys for the advice! Without it, I probably would have stayed on the hotel treadmill and missed out entirely.
