Hey Folks, I am planning on short sleeved Summer / Training shirts. These would be unisex and appear to run a touch and the big side. I am looking at tomato and light blue colors. These are a nice light tech fabric. It appears that the price will be around $15 or $16, or so. The shirts run a touch on the large size and are unisex sized.

If you are interested, please let me know what size, quantity, colors you want.

Oh, please, Barb, I already called dibs on last place, now that I'm still employed I'm still under obligation to run "the circuit" which means Nashville sometime. Rolling Eyes

I was hoping this was the year but with the shuttle launch schedule, not likely. If I wait long enough maybe ...

I just received this email -

Quote:
There are now less than 1500 hours until the third Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon begins. Or so I've been told. The way I see it, you are in deep trouble. Deep deep trouble. I would suggest that you consider starting to train for this thing. I would, if, in fact, training would help in any way.

It won't.

So you may as well not try.

'Tis better to blame November's hurt on a lack of training than on something far deeper. Something you cannot as easily change. Something that, apparently, is a part of your deepest soul: your foolishness. Utter and sheer foolishness. Foolishness manifest in your act of registration last month. Pitiful.

Don't get me wrong. It may not be permanent, your foolishness. Some have seen the error of their ways. A few wise men and women have sent me notes respectfully asking to be removed from the list of registrants for Monkey III. These few have perhaps chiseled away at their foolishness. Imperceptibly. But there it is.

In the mean time, you are still registered. And you have only a little time remaining. You should get your affairs in order. You should kiss those you love. And perhaps, you should pray to what ever force greater than you in which you believe.

If, in fact, that would help in any way.

It won't. Monkey is gonna hurt.

So, where was I? Oh yes. Monkey Marathon. Right. November 23. Packet pickup the day before, didn't I tell you that already? Loads of info on the website, including lodging info, maps, a really goofy message board and pictures of the park. Soon it will include a listing of bib numbers. Soon I will email you more info and maps for the various locations where you will need to be (or avoid) over Monkey weekend.

Answers to questions I have received -

- The first 1/3 mile and last 1/3 mile of the marathon are on grass. The rest is on asphalt.

- The course is not certified. As I have said elsewhere, if you get to the end and you (or your gadget) believe the route to be long, we won't charge you extra; if you believe it to be short, just keep running. But the course is about the right distance.

- Finishers will receive medals. If I can get my act together and have them made. If not, finishers will get to finish. But I should be able to get my act together. Please note, those who do not finish, well, you don't want to know.

- And to repeat something I have said many times before: as always, we are looking for volunteers on race morning. So if you know of anybody smart enough not to run who wants to come out and spend a sweltering or freezing morning in the park helping out, please let us know. Volunteers are awesome!

- Packet pickup will be at the Gordon JCC on November 22, 2008 between 2pm and 4pm. The JCC is located at 801 Percy Warner Blvd, Nashville, TN 37148. This is less than 2 miles from the race start/finish area. Maps to follow.

- We may be able to access the Gordon JCC for showers after the marathon. Stay tuned...

Please holler with questions, curses or interesting facts about the monkeyverse. If you have decided that you are too wise to run this thing, please let us know so we don't send the monkeys out looking for you. So I go to my first high school football game since 1979 last night, and I am sitting with the parents of a new friend of Shannon's. I had met Mom already as the girls played lacrosse together last Spring, but I had never met Dad.

And..........Dad turns out to be a marathoner and he tells me that he is signed up to run this crazy, small, hilly race in Nashville in November. And I say, "The Monkey", and he says, "You know it?".

Any way all you tapers going to Nashville, look for Dave Callahan from Georgia.

Cool! Do you have the shirts yet to where you're going to show what they look like, or are those secret until packet pickup?

I'm still not completely sure about the monkey (although I'm really trying for it), but the good news is I am running on the ankle and ran 10 on it Sunday. The major factor right now is I'm trying to get a sense as to what the ankle (and other body parts that are currently compensating for the ankle not being 100%) can handle by progressively building up the long runs the next couple of weekends. If I can handle 16 okay, I'll add my name back on (which I have scheduled for November 9th). I can tell the ankle is getting better bit by bit each day, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Today's email -

Quote:
In Percy Warner Park, the home of our little Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon, the leaves right now are incredible to behold. Brilliant yellows, creamy oranges and firey reds fill the limbs. The mornings find the trees enshrouded in wisps of light fog or aglow from the morning sunbeams. It is just wonderful.

And it is dangerous.

We learned that just yesterday, on the morning marking exactly two weeks before our little marathon, the monkeys are displeased. And monkeys, not known for their subtlety, have always been a bit uncomfortable with runners in what they believe to be their park. And indeed, the whole idea of the marathon makes them quiver with disgust. We try to hold them back through negotiation and compromise (such as by keeping the field of runners somewhat limited). But monkeys remain unhappy and their bile grows as we approach race day. As it does every year. And this year, it seems that a renegade gang of monkeys acted on their emotion.

You see, yesterday morning in celebration of the autumnal foliage, many runners descended on Percy Warner Park for an easy Sunday morning run. And yesterday morning, amid the glorious fauna, said runners witnessed a hellacious nightmare. Just ghastly.

One of these horrified runners put it succinctly: "The field with the start/finish of the Monkey had a nice deer carcass in the middle, complete with turkey vultures having at the corpse. No sign of the flying monkeys that no doubt perpetrated the killing...Ominous times out there." Another, slightly hopefully, responded: "Foreboding activity. I too saw that ferocious vulture potluck...The Flying Monkeys must be getting restless. I was glad that they picked off a deer first, and let me live to run another day."

We have been warned.

I understand that there are other marathons the weekend of November 23. If you are wise, you may want to see if you can get into one of them. I understand that they are also easier courses than the little marathon you plan to run in Nashville has, so we would certainly understand if you were already looking to change you plans for that weekend. If however you remain unwise, know that we have all been warned. The course's hills remain in place, your training will not help you and now we know that the monkeys mean business. And if you still foolishly plan to join us, you may want to spend the extra hours available to you over the next 13 days and during your taper praying to whatever it is you find holy for your safety. But I, for one, remain terrified.

Oh, and bring some good potluck food to share too. That is important.

See you soon.

Paula and I stayed at the Micro Hotel last yr- we did not have any problems - But I know people had problems with extra charges on credit cards and Micro Hotels would not take them off - some of them came on a yr after the stay- so keep watch on your credit card.

Dalt's? You're having dinner at Dalt's? Instead of joining us at Savarino's? (Which you can't do anyway now that we have reached the limit for the room.)
You will be disappointed. I hope she's good company because the food there is lousy.

Have a great day.

Dalt's does have good beer. And fries. But Dallas won't be there.

Hey, a math question, in theme:

There are 7 monkeys set to ambush the runners.

Each monkey has 7 modes of attack.

With each mode of attack, there are 7 potential victims.

For every potential victim there are 7 other possible casualties.

Question: How many idiots will actually show up to run this thing on Sunday?

You're making my head hurt Trent. Wink
So are you trying to say there is a good likelihood for no chance of survival based on the above math if there is an attack? I want to know what the percent of effectiveness (kill rate) monkey attacks are. If there is 100% kill rate if the monkeys use all attacks, we're doomed as that should take out possibly 343 runners. My guess is 180 will show up.
